The area

Le Bugue is a village just about 6 km (roughly 3 miles) away. It’s a good starting point to discover the Périgord, to shop for food and other supplies or to wine and dine.

Les Eyzies, commonly known as the world’s prehistoric capital, is a World Heritage site. The famous prehistoric museum is definitely worth a visit!

Sarlat is one of the most attractive and alluring towns in southwestern France. Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century. Be sure to taste the delicious foie gras and truffles.
The town and region have featured in more than 150 films.

Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves. They contain some of the best-known Upper Paleolithic art. These paintings are estimated to be 17,300 years old. They primarily consist of primitive images of large animals, most of which are known from fossil evidence to have lived in the area at the time. In 1979, Lascaux was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list along with other prehistoric sites in the Vézère valley.

Périgueux is the prefecture of the department and the capital of the region.

It is also the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. There is an amphitheatre, the remains of a temple of the Gallic goddess, “Vesunna”, and a luxurious Roman villa, called the “Domus of Vesunna”, built around a garden courtyard surrounded by a colonnaded perisink. The buzzing city atmosphere is very typical for the south of France during the day and surprisingly energetic after sunset!

Take your time to discover Bergerac, well-known from Cyrano, the writer of classics of early modern science fiction. Bergerac offers some of the finest wines in the Bordeaux region. The drainage is excellent as a result of its proximity to the Dordogne River. The town has a flourishing tourist industry and features a tobacco museum and is perfect for culinary adventures.

But by all means don’t miss the local markets, night markets and the truffle market in St Alvère, the many beautifully designed gardens, châteaux, bastides, churches, museums, prehistoric caves, fortified villages and the many vineyards in the area.
